I’ll let you decide. Jim Baron and Chris Todd (the men behind the UK live house-funk band) have done it again with 'A Night on Earth', producing a strong album filled with tasteful contemporary House sounds and loaded with plenty of references to the genre’s roots in funk and disco. From the opening bars of ‘Lady T’ (the lead single and first track on the disc) I was met my two familiar elements. One was the ever-present tweety synth and smooth bass that define the Crazy Penis sound, and the other was a rhythm that married the dirty grooves of early 1980’s electro funk, with ‘Off the Wall’ period Michael Jackson production. This trend holds for a large part of the album, though the shade of it’s colour and instrumentation varies quite a bit. As this album grooves on, any lover of funk will find ‘A Night on Earth’ hard to hold back from. This album shows the potential of a band of gifted musicians to take a genre like House (often associated with simplicity and repetition), celebrate its history, and open a portal to it’s future. The tapestry of the Crazy Penis sound is an intricate one indeed, so beautifully crafted and arranged that it’s enjoyed many consecutive spins on my CD player. ‘Turnaway’ smacks of something Madonna or Kylie might have produced back in the 1980’s, walking the fine line between disco classic and disco-kitch… passing through treacherous waters safely courtesy of the Crazy Penis ultra-plush production. ‘Can’t Get Down’ sounds like something Jean-Michel Jarre might have come up with, had he ever found the funk. Just when the electro-beat seems to have slipped away in place of a more progressive, percussion driven sound, the dark and lovely ‘Life is My Friend’ flips the switch magically, with verses that lift you off the ground and choruses that send you in pulses through a fibre-optic cable. No matter how synthetic the tunes become, they are brought back to Earth by some very soulful vocal performances from regular Danielle Moore and a swag of equally smooth guests: Rachel Foster, Tim Davies, Katty Heath and Andy Juan. ‘Sweet Feeling’ sounds like a forgotten Roy Ayers A-side from the mid-seventies, oozing sensuality with clavinet, strings and electric piano. For anyone who grew up as I did, listening to old-school funk, electro and disco, and going to clubs and live acts that spewed forth similar sounds, this album will return any of your lost dance floor vigour, and with it your nineteen-year old smile.” Part 1 Of Crazy Penis-A Night On Earth-CD-2005-BPM Part 2 Of Crazy Penis-A Night On Earth-CD-2005-BPM Part 3 Of Crazy Penis-A Night On Earth-CD-2005-BPM Part 4 Of Crazy Penis-A Night On Earth-CD-2005-BPM
