When he passed away in 1978, Charles Mingus left behind a 40-year legacy as one of jazz's most important bassists and prolific composers. He also left unfinished his most ambitious work, EPITAPH. Originally composed for an open recording session at New York's Town Hall in 1962, EPITAPH was marked by difficulty and the subsequent release was incomplete and disappointing. The idea and score then disappeared for more than 20 years.
Enter jazz scholar Gunther Schuller, who undertook the daunting task of piecing together EPITAPH from extant bits of score and Mingus' handwritten notes for a 1989 concert at Lincoln Center. The result is an expansive work utilizing 30 musicians and spanning more than two hours. Both sacred and profane, controlled and improvisatory, the music encompasses everything Mingus had done up to that point. Many of the pieces, including "Better Get It In Your Soul," one of his most famous, were originally composed as stand-alone pieces. Others were composed specifically for EPITAPH and later found their way into his regular repertoire and still others were specific to this work. Taken as a whole, this is a perfect epitaph for a giant of jazz.
