Bill Nelson's 1996 release, After The Satellite Sings, marked the first time in nearly 10 years Nelson recorded a solo album with vocals in a professional studio. During the decade inbetween 1986's Getting The Holy Ghost Across and this, Nelson recorded numerous albums, many instrumental and soundtrack in nature, in his varying named home studios.
Also during the previous ten years, Nelson had become separated from his wife Jan, who he eventually divorced. He also moved to Japan for a couple years and married Emiko, the former wife of YMO drummer Yukihiro Takahashi. And he had recorded an album with ambient-art rock supergroup Channel Light Vessel (featuring Roger Eno, Kate St John, Laraaji, and Mayumi Tachibana). The 1994 Channel Light Vessel release "Automatic", which garnered universal positive reviews, was Nelson's return, but "After The Satellite Sings" was his comeback.
"Satellite" was the result of a month of work in a professional studio in Northern England. It blended Nelson's signature guitar licks with jungle beats ("Flipside", "Deeply Dazzled"), cool ambience ("V-Ghost"), and traditional-rock sophistication ("Tomorrow Yesterday", "Rocket To Damascus", "Old Goat", and "Blink Agog"). Even though the then-47-year-old Nelson wasn't in the full singing range of his 1970's Be Bop Deluxe days, his restrained vocals and interesting lyrics fit the moods of the songs.
Many fans agree that "After The Satellite Sings" is Nelson's best 'commercial' work in the 90's. An often criticism amongst longtime fans is that Nelson has spent too many years frittering away his time, releasing unpolished material which - while excellent - could and should be taken to a higher level. "Satellite" delivers some of Nelson's best songs from the 1990's to that level and beyond.
