Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Gil Rose, conductor)

A dynamic young composer of chamber and orchestral music, Norman (b. 1979) is known for his wit, clarity, vigor, and keen sense of playfulness, qualities displayed to perfection in this album. This recording’s two works, Play and its precursor Try, possess a uniquely 21st-century DNA, drawing inspiration for instrumental virtuosity from, among other things, video games. Play demands that the orchestra tackle a multitude of extended performance techniques which, combined with small acts of choice making from both the players and the conductor, insure that no two performances will be alike.

“A sprawling, engulfing, furiously unpredictable piece.” –Alex Ross, The Rest is Noise “The Boston Modern Orchestra Project, led by conductor Gil Rose, is as essential to the success of this album as the score itself and the ensemble’s aesthetic buy-in is palpable. …something rare, something uninhibited, is happening here.” –Doyle Armbrust, Q2 Music “A Norman creation of this magnitude—like the people who play it—is thoroughly, eagerly in the present, in your face, on a joyous, deliberate mission… Norman may be producing some of the most aggressively gymnastic music being written today… Play sounds like it’s producing enough energy to run Massachusetts for a few days.” –Porter Anderson, Thought Catalog.
