Alice Phoebe Lou - Paper Castles (2019)

Alice Phoebe Lou's refusal to conform to pop industry norms has led to Paper Castles, an honest collection of songwriting that mixes jazz, blues and indie-folk elements. She tackles tricky subject matter with grace and honesty: she calls out an attempted assault on “Skin Crawl” as acoustic guitars and strings swell around her, and describes a tumultuous romance as an “Ocean”. Throughout, she sings in a piercing voice full of strength and vibrato about how ill-conceived and fragile the forts we build around us really are, and breaks them down in favour of raw, unadorned truth.
