The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul and R&B singing group. Roebuck "Pops" Staples (1914–2000), the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha (1934–2013), Pervis (b. 1935), Yvonne (b. 1936), and Mavis (b. 1939). They are best known for their 1970s hits "Respect Yourself", "I'll Take You There", "If You're Ready (Come Go with Me)", and "Let's Do It Again", all of which (except "I'll Take You There") peaked on the Hot 100 within a week from Christmas Day.

After a brief stint on Curtis Mayfield's Curtom Records in 1975 which yielded the number one pop hit "Let's Do It Again," the Staple Singers entered into a deal with Warner Bros. Shortening their name to the Staples, Pops, Mavis, Cleotha, and Yvonne decided to continue their relationship with Mayfield, asking him to produce their first Warner effort, 1976's Pass It On. While the album lacked a surefire hit like its predecessor, it continued to blend the group's signature gospel sound with soul, R&B, pop, and disco. Standout track "Sweeter Than the Sweet" is a classic uptempo gospel/soul rave-up featuring some of group's strongest vocals, and the title track features a deep, soulful groove courtesy of Pops' and Mayfield's dueling guitars and the impassioned vocal interplay between Mavis and Pops. While the Staples would never again reach the upper echelons of the pop charts, Pass It On is a solid release by a veteran group who could produce classic soul music like no one else. woundedbird.com

Judging by the diverse nature of 1977's "Family Tree" part of the problem seemed to have been Record simply didn't know what to do with the Staples. Clearly given a mandate to return them to the top-40 charts Record responded by trying a little bit of everything including throwaway disco ('Let's Go To the Disco'), Sly Stone-styled funk ('Color Me Higher') and bland top-40 ballads (a needless cover of 'I Honestly Love You'). Surrounded by elaborate production work (check out the extensive liner note credits) the end results were professional, but seldom really caught fire - the Staples themselves seemed detached and uninterested with most of the material. One of the few performances to capture their unique blend of Gospel, soul, and social activism the title track was probably the standout performance - great tune and wonderful performances by Mavis and Pops Staples. That's probably why Warner Brothers tapped it as a single: 'Family Tree' b/w 'I Honestly Love You' (Warner Brothers catalog number WBS 8510). A second 45 was pulled from the album in the form of 'See a Little Further (Than My Bed)' b/w 'Let's Go To the Disco' (Warner Brothers catalog number WBS 8460). Not one of their best, but it does feature two songs by singer/songwriter Paul Kelly, a cult favorite. Kelly should have gotten the Staples to sing more of his tunes because they sound better interpreting them than he does. Kelly's "God Can" and "Don't Burn Me," benefit from the singing and recording technique; Kelly's own recordings sounded like he cut them in a closet. The productions by Jerry Wexler and Barry Becket are first-class but the material is third-rate. Other than the two Paul Kelly songs, "Leave It All Up to Love," and the percolating "Chica Boom," there's nothing else to get excited about.www.woundedbird.com
