Biography
Unconventional Dutch conglomerate formed in 1979 when punk first hit the Netherlands and a variety of like minds came together as a politically active musical and social unit. The Ex were formed from the ashes of two small local bands, and their varied membership has included G.W. Sok (vocals), Terrie Hessels (guitar), Sabien Witteman (drums), Katrin Bornfeld (drums), Jos Kley (vocals), Han Buhrs (vocals), Yoke Laarman (bass), Luc Klaassen (bass), Wineke T. Hart (violin), Kees vanden Haak (saxophone), John van der Weert (vocals/guitar), Nicolette (guitar), Dolf Planteydt (guitar) and Tom Greene (guitar). They were strongly linked to a variety of left-field concerns in general and the Amsterdam squatting movement in particular (they also released a joint live album of a benefit tour for striking British miners).

Although the band started life as strictly agit-prop punk, they later incorporated elements such as Eastern folk music, funk and various other styles. Scrabbling At The Lock (1991) and And The Weathermen Shrug Their Shoulders (1993), for instance, were collaborations with avant garde cellist Tom Cora, and they have also recorded with Iraqi Kurdish group Awara, Ethiopian saxophonist Getatchew Mekuria, and US post-rockers Tortoise. Guests on other works have included Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Jon Langford (Mekons), and the Dog Faced Hermans (whose guitar player, Andy "Ex" Moor, joined Ex in 1990). In 1998 they signed to Touch & Go Records for distribution in the USA, and recorded a string of albums with the infamous American producer Steve Albini.

The Ex's attitude to the place of rebel music in the scheme of things can best be summed up by a statement on the rear of 1985's Pokkeherrie: «Where have all the musicians gone? The ones who made sound disturb, who pulled down the stage, who forged music into a weapon. Where have all the musicians gone? They perform in supermarkets and have their instruments tuned. "Our ears are deaf and our strings are wrapped up in silk. We hurt nobody."» A lowlands equivalent to Fugazi then, but with probably more stylistic variation.
