Matterhorn is the 1979 album by The Louis Bellson Drum Explosion. Originally released on Pablo, this CD was released on 23 September, 2003 by Original Jazz Classics/Fantasy. The cover shows two drum sets, for it features Bellson and a fellow drummer that he "battles".
This is Louis Bellson's collaboration with Billy Cobham. Some of the material here was performed live and released as a video. The arrangements are likable, but the obvious intent here is to amaze and delight those enamored with virtuosic drumming. The duels between Cobham and Bellson are intense and demonstrate their differences in technique. Cobham's approach is sheer power based on instinct, while Bellson's is more carefully planned and played with flawless precision. The two separate solos are both excellent, and Bellson seemed to be even more inspired than usual. This is moderately recommended for jazz fans, but should be required listening for all drummers.
