Sandrine Piau (Soprano)
Susan Manoff (Piano)

Geoff Brown
The pure, prancing soprano voice of Sandrine Piau might be most associated with Baroque finery such as Vivaldi and Handel. But no one should ever place a singer in a box. She has already made one album of Debussy songs on CD; now she shows her mettle in Evocations, a personal, adventuresome mix of French and German items variously extolling the feminine spirit and the lure of love and desire. The recital is intimate and unusual – refreshing in a record industry too often stuck on a treadmill.
Try her Strauss. Usually his chromatic, rollercoasting melodies bring out singers’ most voluptuous tones. Medium-voiced, with scant vibrato, Piau isn’t equipped for the plush parade: but her elegant agility in the Mädchenblumen cycle still brings home the goods. She’s wonderfully touching, delineating these flower-women’s characters with an elegant agility perfectly matched, here and throughout, by the penetrating piano accompaniments of Susan Manoff. Ivy, the timid flower quivering with deep emotion, seems to attract most of Piau’s sympathy. Not a self-portrait, surely?
In terms of repertoire, the five songs by Alexander Zemlinsky should be the disc’s brightest surprise. History casts Zemlinsky as a secondary figure in early 20th-century Vienna; but Piau’s pick proves he could pitch like a giant. There seem so few notes in his Heine setting of Frühlingslied, each one trembling with feeling.
Even so, it’s in her native French where Piau remains most obviously at home, where the words become her personal friends. Her third Chausson mélodie, Serenade, ends by conjuring “ un soir frissonant et clair”. On cue, Piau’s voice flies up to the sky, her tone as clear and thrilling as Chausson’s poet could desire. On the opening track, utterly beguiling, Chausson sets the disc’s mood with the atmospheric languor of Hebe, couched in the Phrygian mode and decorated with a rippling accompaniment. Look out, too, for Piau’s limpid beauty in Koechlin’s Sept Chansons pour Gladys, the bizarre offspring of the composer’s obsession with the German film star Lilian Harvey.
Whatever the language and composer, Piau and Manoff penetrate the music’s tender heart. This CD doesn’t shout the obvious; it may not top the charts. But in its small, jewelled, intoxicating way, it gives voluminous pleasure.
