Before he became Heavy Metal's legendary frontman, Ronnie Dio trained his craft as the lead of the Red Caps and later The Prophets, two early garage/doo wop styled rock bands. This release collects the rarest and the best of Dio's output from those early years, featuring 28 tracks, 4 previously unreleased. Hear where one of the most recognizable voices in rock n' roll history began.

While it wouldn't seem far-fetched to believe that Ronnie James Dio just sort of appeared from another dimension as a fully formed heavy metal god, the iconic frontman who once stood at the vanguard of bands like Black Sabbath and Rainbow had been recording music for almost 20 years before he would become a household name in heavy metal circles. Taking a look back at his time spent with Ronnie Dio & the Prophets, with whom he recorded throughout most of the '60s, The Early Years finds the singer who would eventually bring us "Holy Diver" crooning his way through early rock staples like "Love Potion #9" and "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow." Unsurprisingly, the songs work pretty well, and while it's a bit strange hearing a voice that's distinctly Dio belting his way through some bubblegum classics, it's clear that he was always destined for success. It was just a matter of biding his time until the music could be epic enough to properly contain his full power.

I received my copy of this cd today and have listened to it, non-stop. A typical Dio fan will find the music contained on this disc hard to swallow, but it is the start of what was to come. It is not Heavy Rock, as Dio is known for, but he himself liked classical music and being open minded to all types of music, I find this really an enjoyable release. The track "Mr. Misery" is one of my favorites. The original and Italian version are both contained here. The recordings themselves are not up to modern standards, so the somewhat scratchy sound of some of the tracks, remerbering that they were recorded in the late 1950's to early 1960's, it is quite nostalgic to hear them, as they were recorded. Anyway, enough of that. Have an open mind wth music and share the passion that was Ronnie! You Have the Power, Stand Up and Shout!!!
