THE CLASSIC 1996 BROADCAST By the mid-1990s the Red Hot Chili Peppers were going through a transitional period. Following the first departure of guitarist John Frusciante in 1992, and several abortive attempts to audition a replacement, the group finally teamed up with former Jane s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro in 1994. Navarro made many notable appearances with the band, including Woodstock 94, headline slots at Pukkelpop and Reading festivals, and two dates opening for The Rolling Stones. On 12th September 1995, the Chilis released their only album to feature the new guitarist, One Hot Minute. The record was a stylistic departure for the band, featuring more psychedelic and heavy metal riffs alongside their more typical funk rock sound. The lyrical content too was much darker, taking a deeper look into the subjects of death and drug addiction. The group began their European tour in support of the album on 27th September 1995, and were due to play dates in the U.S., but were forced to postpone these after drummer Chad Smith broke his wrist. The group resumed touring in 1996 however, and performed a number of shows in America and further dates in Europe. The gig featured on this CD was performed at the San Diego Sports Arena in California on 16th April 96 and was broadcast live over FM radio; the audio for which is presented here in exceptional audio quality, save for some irritating radio station bleeping in an attempt to disguise some colourful language Featuring a broad range of songs from RHCP s back catalogue and a number of cuts from their latest release, this show confirms that even at a time of great disruption and difficulty, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were always a musical force to be reckoned with.
