In PBS’s show of Sir Paul McCartney’s June 2nd command performance at the White House, it is difficult to tell who is more star struck - President Obama or Sir Paul. Wait - it’s actually difficult to tell whether the president is star struck at all.

But the lad from Liverpool wasn’t afraid to gush to a whooping and hollering East Room audience: “Getting this prize would just be good enough - but getting it from THIS president!”

Sir Paul’s enthusiasm for being selected the third recipient of the Library of Congress’s George Gershwin Prize for Popular Song - the first was Paul Simon and the second Stevie Wonder - was clearly evident in his musical performance.

The 68-year-old’s opening number, a rockin’ Got To Get You Into My Life, may have shaken the chandeliers of the ornately decorated East Room where Gilbert Stuart’s staid portrait of George Washington has hung since 1800.

But as the ninety-minute show progressed with performances that swept across the music spectrum, the East Room venue took on a clubby tone. McCartney admirer comedian Jerry Seinfeld delivered a gentle riff on marriage that played on McCartney lyrics, ending with an analysis of Let It Be.

Stevie Wonder performed We Can Work It Out. Country stylist Faith Hill delivered a soulful version of Long and Winding Road, and Elvis Costello performed Penny Lane. There were other McCartney numbers performed by the Jonas Brothers, Jack White, Herbie Hancock, Corinne Bailey Rae, Emmylou Harris, Lang Lang, and Dave Grohl. And then Sir Paul, noting that he had been “itching to do this at the White House”, returned to the stage to sing to Michelle in a special tribute to the First Lady. That was followed by Eleanor Rigby, Let It Be, and a Hey Jude sing-along.

Standing in front of the Washington portrait for the award presentation, President Obama noted that “part of what gets us through tough times is music” and went on to describe McCartney as the most successful songwriter in history, observing that his tunes had been on the pop charts for 32 years.

In his acceptance, Sir Paul said that while everyone knew about the problems President Obama faced, “Billions of us are rooting for you.”

But the burning question on most viewers’ minds may not have been whether President Obama ultimately will solve those problems but rather “Where the heck is Ringo?”
