Commissioned by the champion of modern music in the United States, Elizabeth Coolidge, Les rèves de Jacob was written in 1949 and scored for oboe and four stringed instruments. In its five movements, Milhaud depicts stages in the life of the Old Testament Jacob, from the book of Genesis. The composer indicated that the oboe serves as the divine and it is interesting how he could take an ordinary commission and infuse his ideas with a deeper, religious significance. This work is characterized by the subtle shadings of the strings and the poignant melodic interest of the solo line, with a strong sense of ensemble as opposed to a chamber-concerto sound world.–interesting, but not one of Milhaud's most profound musical utterances.
