Anyone who has had the opportunity to see Doug MacLeod perform, listened to his dozen or so albums, or read any of the 72 columns he wrote for Blues Revue from 1999 to 2010 knows that he is a storyteller and/or philosopher prince (if not philosopher king). He’s an affable – as in easy-going – musician who has been headed down the road a long piece and has plenty of stories to tell. His latest CD, Brand New Eyes, is topped to the brim with good music and a lifetime of collected wisdom. The 56-minute disc opens with the title song. The lyrics are simple: Keep looking at things with wonder; don’t get locked into preconceived notions. Good to remember, but the real strength of the song is MacLeod’s playing. Nobody works a National Reso-Phonic guitar better. Doug lays out his recommendations on how to see life, throws in a perfect phrase about getting rid of the “botheration on your mind,” and then takes off after about two minutes on a finely articulated guitar run. For those who play six-string, hearing it is a little like looking at a stained glass window in a cathedral where the colors, tone, and intrinsic message overwhelm the beholder. The other ten tracks – all MacLeod originals – are equally fine. Most of the time it’s just Doug singing and playing the National, adding occasional boot heel percussion. But long-time cohorts Denny Croy on bass and drummer Dave Kida, who worked with him on Whose Truth, Whose Lies (2000), Little Sin (2002), and Dubb (2005), do turn up for “The Train Of Change,” a speedy tune which chugs along like the old Santa Fe Super Chief on the run from Chicago to L.A.MacLeod also revives his “Some Old Blues Song,” the tune Son Seals covered as “I Can Count On My Blues” on Bad Axe (1984), and there is one MacLeod instrumental called “Somewhere South Of Somewhere,” located smack-dab (or dubb) at the emotional point where man, musician, art, and artist intersect. It’s a good answer to the “botheration” of life, too.–Bill Wasserzieher
