Kingtime memories
I got acquainted with Petri and Kingston Wall in 1990. A few years earlier I had bought my first video camera and was eagerly capturing moments from my own and my friends' daily life. I shot Kingston Wall’s first Freak Out Club performance on March 27th 1991, right after Sami had joined the band. Soon Pete told me I was the band’s cameraman of choice. Spring 1992 found me studying media skills, with an interest in shooting and editing video, so I began working on a Kingston Wall documentary as my thesis. I joined the band on their Finnish tours, driving the tour bus and handling the video camera. This resulted in a wealth of material for my documentary, which was finished in the spring of 1993.
After what happened in the summer of 1995 I decided to compile an updated version of my documentary, titled Petri Walli In Memoriam, for the commemorative event at Tavastia Club. I tagged along a new music video of the song I'm The King I’m The Sun, from the band’s last album.
I then carried on with my job as the director of a video workshop and felt no desire to return to the tapes I had shot. During the years many people have asked me about this material, and from time to time I’ve gone back to the archives and prepared small compilations. The seeds for the idea of putting together a DVD were sown.
In 2005 me and Jukka Jylli created a music video for the song With My Mind, due to the release of the album Real Live Thing. Me and Jukka worked further on putting the DVD together. We went through the tape archives, looking for clips with good quality sound. This DVD, thus, is first and foremost a compilation of Kingston Wall's music rather than a documentary. I wanted to include a lot of the material I had shot, and edited it as little as possible. I hope this gives the viewer a clear picture of the band’s image.
The DVD has 48 unreleased minutes of interviews with Petri Walli, compiled of outtakes from the In Memoriam video. These leftovers have turned out to be valuable insights into Petri's thinking at the time. Extra materials consist of road movie-style shots from the road and of daily life as we experienced it. The band's shows often were based on improvisation, and also many times when I turned the video camera on, it happened on a whim. That’s the feeling I wanted this DVD to have.
I wanted to also include the Petri Walli In Memoriam video in its original form. Looking back, I would probably want to change a lot of things in In Memoriam, but it is a picture of its time, and it was created with a lot of respect for Pete. A majority of the live material was shot with a single VHS camera, so the quality is poor by today's standards. On the other hand the camera I used was surprisingly able at recording sound, and VHS quality may have a certain similar rough-edged nostalgia as the vinyl format does.
The purpose is also to offer these moments to the people, who missed the trio live on stage. On the other hand, the clips also bring memories to those, who were there. This is for all of you who love Kingston Wall’s music. While working on the edit, I often got instructions from Pete, who with a mischievous smile on his lips urged me to continue and to make it better and even better.
