Thoroughly trained by his father Johann Sebastian, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach became renowned as a virtuoso harpsichordist and organist. His surviving organ music includes the seven choral preludes and ten fugues on this disc, which range from relatively simple settings to elaborate displays of counterpoint. Born in Rio de Janeiro and based in the USA, Julia Brown, who has made several acclaimed recordings of keyboard music by Buxtehude and Scheidemann for Naxos, has been praised as ‘a first-class artist and superb technician … an exceptionally sensitive stylist’

Classics Today

A man of difficult temperament and an inclination to live a dissolute life is often reflected in the volatile and inconsistent musical style of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. The eldest son of Johann Sebastian, he studied the organ and composition with his father, and was later to occupy important church organ positions in Dresden and Halle. He appears to have been little liked by his employers, and was to spend the last twenty of his seventy-four years without a regular source of income. That said, there were many contemporary writers who spoke highly of his playing, and this disc would disclose a composer of considerable merit, the big and bold F major Fugue (track 3) of a quality that would have sat happily under his father’s name. Spaced between the ten fugues chosen by Julia Brown, we have the Seven Choral Preludes, and if the fugues are outgoing, the preludes are essentially of a gentle nature. By the time we reach the fugues in B flat major and A minor, which close the disc, we have traversed much of his compositional life. To purists I may be a musical heretic, but I would have liked to hear the admirable soloist in performances that used more urgent tempos to inject a greater degree of impact. She plays the Gottfried and Mary Fuchs Organ in the Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, its tonal quality in the correct era but without the wheeziness of period instruments. A modest degree of reverberation yields an admirable sound.
