Made after his official resignation from the Berlin Phil and six months before his death, this last recording is likely - at least in part - reflective of Karajan's mental tossing and turning before he died. We could gather that he felt quite wronged, and wanted to express forgiveness then to bid the world a farewell.
All in all, I find this a brilliantly conducted recording, and have returned to it again and again.
We could begin with the vocals first. I find Domingo quite in his element for this part, if for nothing else but the low note in "Di' tu se fedele". For a tenor, I guess it could be quite difficult. I don't think Pavarotti has sang its true value in live performances - he always made it an octave higher. In the video recording of this very performance under Solti, after Karajan had died, Domingo similarly made it an octave higher. But in this audio recording he goes down quite well. He has by this time entered the more burnished and mature stage of his voice, but the dramatic delivery and character portrayal have been refined. The death scene (both on stage and off) is an impressive piece of acting whether you see it or not.
Josephine Barstow's voice is fine, and I find her singing to be affected. Her pleading aria "Morro, ma prima in grazia" has an excellent development and is very moving. Nonetheless she was the most problematic among the cast when I first listened to the set - and this because of her diction. When she sings Italian, somehow she seems to hold some of the words in her mouth. I have noted the same - although to a lesser extent - with the popular Jonas Kaufmann.
Sumi Jo is a national treasure of Korea, I think. Her voice is perfectly clear, especially when it goes into her higher register. It truly flies out. Consequently her Oscar is delightful and carefree like a child, a rather simple soul.
Combined with Leo Nucci and Quivar, what we have is a range of voice TYPES, and I think that is behind Karajan's casting choices. In Domingo you have a heroic, commanding voice with a brass ring to it. It stands in contrast with Nucci's almost subdued, serious-toned, and older-sounder voice, and both in service of their characters. Barstow's voice almost contains within itself a constrained passion, very much consistent with a woman of society, which stands in contrast with both Quivar and Jo. Thus you have different characters already embodied in their vocal qualities.
The voices though, do not make this a special recording. Karajan's conducting, together with the splendid sound from Weiner Philarmonikar, does. If my memory serves me correctly, Placido Domingo, in his autobiography, had made special mention of this recording, and of the amazing humility with which Karajan approached the score, since the maestro had left the piece for a while prior to this project. It really shows. A great deal of polish and precision, which is to be expected, combined with all the proper drama, the full dynamic ranges, and all kinds of sensitivities and subtleties. The chorus "Cor si grande e generosso" as Gustavo is dying, with a shimmering background of the strings as its backdrop, goes into a magnificent crescendo, and the whole thing is just heartbreaking.
The premiere of this performance in July, 1989, took place with Solti as a last-minute replacement. I have seen the video recording of it. The orchestra loses none of its sonority. Domingo does not do the low note in his aria as mentioned above. But that final crescendo is missing. The elegiac effect from the music is very much reduced. However, it is well-compensated by Domingo's remarkable acting skills, along with a sumptuous set and beautiful costumes.
Apparently, Karajan had been working on Mahler's 2nd symphony before he died. Perhaps he had discarded the idea of reincarnation after all and had longed for Resurrection instead?
