Another year, another beer, and yet another company for the long running German Metallers. It would have seemed, like GRAVE DIGGER had found their home, with their signing to their frontman's A&R managed, former label, locomotive, but for reasons un-beknown to us, that probably only an interview could explain, they' re yet again mobilized and moving onwards to Napalm, a fairly good and steady company, that is however better known for it's extreme and gothic artists, rather than a haven for true heavy metal bands. (Ok Tyr might be the exception ….)

At any rate, GRAVE DIGGER in the late 90s scored an out of the blue hit and a monumental resurgence with their mightily impressive "Tunes Of War" album, only to see their popularity weaken again after a while, with personnel changes, threatening to throw the balance off for good and signal a second "death" for the band… that had also disbanded back in the day… At any rate they soldiered on and by bringing in Ex Rage guitarist Manni, they managed to stabilize things again and regain some of the lost momentum.

2008 sees the release of "Ballads Of A Hangman" which must be something like their 15th studio album (excluding - live, compilations and EP s) and is a bona fide GRAVE DIGGER album! Think Accept and Running Wild mostly in mid tempo with a few splashes of Rage, and Chris Boltendahl's grimm and throaty vocals …and you pretty much got it! I have to say that along with their last album, this sounds like the most consistent outing since the early 00's and the band's eponymous album!

The title track, "Hell Of Disillusion", "Into The War", "Shadow Of The Soul" the theatrical and quite atmospheric but still heavy "Funeral For A Fallen Angel" and the albums closer "Pray" with it's rather weird but quite effective shouted chorus are all worthy additions to the band's long and illustrious catalogue…

Overall - a pretty good album by a pretty good and pretty damn consistent band - that has almost always delivered the goods and has not bowed to any commercial pressures or trends.
