The termination of Glazunov's quest in lyrical and loftily solemn spheres is embodied in Symphony No.4 (Op.48, 1893). Non-traditional for the beginning of symphony cycles Andante develops the first of them, monumental festive Finale — the second. Symphony is opened by an elegic theme, where a listener is plunged into the profound element of the singing of the Svetlanov orchestra. Scherzo — the second movement of the Symphony — is light, pierced with optimism music. Symphony's Finale as if united third and fourth movements of the cycle — Andante, Allegro. Intonational pitch of Andante is in full harmony with the themes of the first movement; Allegro — brilliantly solemn procession, which is crowned with the hymn to light and human intelligence — that's the way the conductor treats it.
Symphony No:5 (Op.55, 1895) is the acme of Glazunov's symphonism. Balance of forms, harmony of dramaturgy, bright national basis all this is characteristic of a mature style of the composer.
The whole thematic material of the cycle is laid by the invocatory exclamations of the introduction which is perceived as a certain epigraph to the work. The second movement — ellegant Scherzo, light, fantastic, bearing a trace of humour. In Andante, the best part of the Symphony, splendid mastery of the conductor is most completely revealed. Under his baton the orchestra produces the unique indivisible sound. The same perfection accompanies the powerful scope, motifs of rejoicing. The constant flow of folk merry-making leads to the apotheosis where the orchestra splashes multicoloured waves of sounds.
