Gilberto Gil was born in the district of Tororo, in Salvador, Bahia. His father, Dr. José Gil Moreira and his mother Claudine, in search of a better life, they change the poor neighborhood of Salvador into the state in Ituaçu at the time a village with about eight hundred inhabitants. Gil Ali spent the first eight years of life. This period the artist records the influence of music heard, especially on the radio:
"… My first time listening to music, everything happened at a time when Luiz Gonzaga, especially there in the Northeast, where I lived, there in the scrub, was virtually the same corner of the region …"
With eight years back to Salvador, where he studies at Marist College, and attends an academy accordion. When I was in high school, the mother received a guitar and knows the work of Joao Gilberto, who influences him immediately.
In college of Directors, Gil meets Caetano Veloso, his sister Bethania, Gal Costa and Tom Zé. Made the first presentation at the inauguration of Teatro Vila Velha in June 1964 - with the show "We, By Example
