Nikolai Ghiaurov-Great Scenes from Verdi

From the golden age of Opera the soprano and tenors were not the only shining personalities. They were some bass/barytones that supported them an they even gained the artistic impressions. One of them was the great Bulgarian Bass/Barytone Nicolai Ghiaurov. He continued the tradition of the great Eastern European basses.

He was one of the most important "Boris" in Mussorgsky's opera, but also a great bass/barytone of the Italian repertoire. He was the definetive bass on Verdi Reqiuem which sang them with the most important concuctors of the time. The voice of God itself!

From Decca's legendary Classic recital's we have a wondureful sample of his great artistry. This album date back to 1969 where Ghiaurov's voice was at its peak. Accompanied by the great Italian maestro Claudio Abbado conducting the London Symphony Opera and the Ambrosian Singers Chorus. The Maestro and orchestra give an absolute performance, matching Ghiaurov's performance.

I believe there is no match or any other to be compared with this performance. They 're on the top!
