Crystal Voyager is a soundtrack album by G. Wayne Thomas to the 1972 surfing film. The soundtrack album was released a year later on the Warm & Genuine label. The compact disc was released in Japan via King Records on 26 November, 2004.
Crystal Voyager was a surf film directed by David Elfick, and released in 1972. This is a surf film of the Endless Summer variety, where the director followed a few surfers around looking for waves, buds, and good times. By the time the 70's came across, surf films would feature less dialogue, and the footage would tell the story. Often times, the best waves in the film were notable for the music playing behind it. If you liked the Morning Of The Earth soundtrack I put on the tracker a few weeks ago, you will enjoy this as well, as the entire soundtrack album was performed and written by G. Wayne Thomas, who did the title track to Morning Of The Earth. (Unfortunately, Crystal Voyager has often been tagged as a Pink Floyd film, and it isn't. Director Elfick wanted to end his movie in a big and bold way, and maybe it was nothing more than a way to pad out the film. He was able to gain permission to use Pink Floyd's "Echoes" for the film's final scene, not an excerpt but the full song. It is this scene that the film is known for, shots of being in and out of the waves, moving in slow motion, shot with a fish-eye lens. It is this segment that the film is known for. The band were so moved by the use of their song, that they would use the same footage during live shows when they performed "The Great Gig In The Sky".) This CD is a Japan-only release, and features two bonus tracks that were not on the original album.
