First of all, let me warn my careless reader that this album is not suitable for those seeking the Fates' sound of old, which leaned more towards prog/power metal than the sound they practise here. BUT! This isn't either advised to those seeking the uber-progressive sound that Jim Matheos and company offered in albums like "Disconnected" and "A Pleasent Shade Of Grey". No, this album is simply a great balance between the different experiments of all Fates Warning's phases. More guitar-laden than the previous efforts, but not as heavy as the 80's releases, that's basically the sound you'll find here. The songs can be divided in three categories: guitar-driven, heavier cuts like "Simple Human" or "Crawl"; quieter, more progressive-sounding moments, such as "River Wide Ocean Deep", with its fantastic middle-eastern influences and top-notch guitar and drum work by two of the best musicians on the scene, and the beautiful "A Handful Of Doubt", which emphatizes the god-like vocal master that goes by the name of Ray Alder. Last but not least, we have songs that surely deserve the "progressive-rock" title, like "Another Perfect Day", "Left Here" and "Heal Me", for they balance in a perfect fashion the heaviness of the guitars and the really catchy and hypnotic hooks with the complex structure typical to prog releases. All in all, there isn't much "metal" to be found here, altough some songs do sound heavy enough to satisfy a slighty less "tr00" metalhead; however, the progressive elements make this album catchy enough to please even people who don't normally enjoy this kind of music. Every musician plays his role perfectly: Ray Alder is in perfect shape (particularly during the ballads), Jim Matheos' solos and riffs are completely mind-blowing (as well as his songwriting skill), and Mark and Joey do an excellent rythmic session (Mark is particularly good, too bad he would leave the band later). Conclusion: it's prog metal, and it balances prog and metal in a simple and catchy way, being heavy enough for tradicional heavy metal fans and progressive enough for prog-rock/metal addicts. Once again, these veterans of the american progressive rock scene have put out a highly recommendable record.
