In 2003, six former students from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris founded the ‘Capriccioso’ Ensemble. The group varies in number according to the repertory, but is generally based on the work of six instrumentalists, including violin, viola, cello, clarinet, horn and piano, who recently performed Krzysztof Penderecki’s Sextet. The founder members of the Ensemble are very interested in this unusual combination of instruments and seek to enlarge the somewhat limited range of works available for it. In 2004 the young composer Karol Beffa wrote a sextet for the Ensemble. Nicolas Bacri was very impressed by their playing and the following year gave them his permission to make a transcription (under his watchful eye) of his fourth symphony (Symphonie classique ‘Sturm und Drang’). Bacri transcribed Schoenberg’s First Chamber Symphony at the request of the Ensemble, who gave the first performance in January 2006, the original version having been published a century earlier, in July 1906. A month later, the Ensemble Capriccioso took part in Jean-Michel Damian’s programme ‘La Terasse des Audiences’ for France-Musique, which was devoted to the music of Penderecki and broadcast live in February 2006. The members of the Ensemble have been invited in July 2006 as musicians in residence during the Festival des Forêts, held at venues including the châteaux of Compiègne and Pierrefonds. A sextet is being specially composed by Richard Dubugnon for the occasion. The Capriccioso Ensemble gives regular performances of music by central European composers, including Zemlinsky, Schoenberg, Penderecki, Schreker and Fibich, in Paris at the Maison de la Radio, the Salle Cortot and the Czech Centre. Their enthusiasm for this repertory has also resulted in an invitation to play in Poland (Warsaw and Cracow) as part of the next season.
