# Edgar is one of Puccini’s early works, yet its music and style are remarkably advanced. This studio recording features Plácido Domingo in the title role. The other three soloists are the 26-year-old soprano Adriana d’Amato (a recent “Operalia” winner who has just sung Violetta at the Met), the celebrated bass Juan Pons, and the mezzo Marianna Cornetti, who has frequently sung major Verdi roles. The Orchestra dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia is conducted by Alberto Veronesi, chief conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana di Palermo as well as music and artistic director of the Puccini Festival in Torre di Lago.


# Plácido Domingo celebrated his 65th birthday on 21 January 2006, and Deutsche Grammophon is releasing three new projects in the “Domingo Year 2006”. . . . a convincing performance. Ther is no hint of strain, and throughout an arduous three acts he uses his voice with all his accustomed commitment and fervour . . . Domingo is well partnered by Marianna Cornetti as Tigrana and Adriana Damato as Fidelia.

One has to admire a singer who, despite being in his sixties, is still undertaking new roles, both on record and, more laudably, on stage . . . Of the men, Rafa³ Siwek's dark bass is noted, even in his small role. Juan Pons's tone has a slight huskiness in places . . . it is firm and strong enough to meet Domingo's in their scenes together. Edgar is a more interesting role and suits Domingo well. His voice still burns with intensity, remains surely supported and steady and suggests no hint or evidence of strain . . . The recorded sound is full and clear . . .
