Dee Dee Bridgewater (born May 27, 1950) is an American jazz singer. She is a three-time Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter, as well as a Tony Award - winning stage actress and host of National Public Radio's syndicated radio show JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater. She is a United Nations Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization.
Bridgewater is the first American to be inducted to the Haut Conseil de la Francophonie. She has received the Award of Arts and Letters in France. She also won the 1975 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance in The Wiz. This DVD concert is sung primarily in French, although on a few standards, Ms. Bridgewater sang some songs in english. What makes this dvd so special, is the flexibility in Ms. Bridgewater's approach. She sings "J'ai Duex Amours" seductively, "My Man" with a strong calypso beat; and "Girl Talk" as a strong, shouting funk. Then she does "La Belle Vie", starting with breathless seduction and morphing into strong, solid cabaret-style lines. My favorite is her unique take on "La Vie en Rose." The featured accordion playing, thus adding the European flavor of the standards.
