Possession is the second album from heavy metal band Christian Mistress, who hail from Olympia, WA, and follows 2010's acclaimed Agony & Opium. The band has attracted a great deal of attention for this sophomore effort, and it is easy to see why: the album is excellent. Deliciously analog, the sound is honey smooth with a burnt caramel edge to it, just the right amount of grit in the silk. Christian Mistress play with textures and tones, dark and light, and create something that is purely pleasurable to listen to.Musicians:
The sound Christian Mistress produce is unbelievably sensual. The urgent drumming of Reuben Storey evokes a lover's beating heart, the way that passion can make you awake of your pulse fluttering in your wrists and temples. The duelling guitars of Oscar Sparbel and Ryan McClain swoop and clash like a lover's quarrel before resolving into a perfectly harmonious, passionate entanglement.
The ambitious guitars are tempered by the deeper, more subdued but still luscious tones of Johnny Wulf's bass. The centrepiece of their sound is unquestionably Christine Davis' voice, however, which can be meltingly warm or rough and raw, as likely to split your lip as kiss it. Her charisma and bravado serves as the eye of the passionate storm that Christian Mistress conjures up.
For all the sonic indulgence they bestow on the listener, Possession is not a indolent, languid album. Quite the opposite, in fact. The pace often gallops forward breathlessly, with a genuine excitement and urgency. “Conviction” leaves the listener gasping at the crashing, whirling momentum of it, evoking a delightful anxiety. “Haunted Hunted” plays with more ominous, obsessive tones, the grooving bass line and eerie cymbals stalking the listener.
Possession is an exceptional piece of heavy metal, unpretentious and unqualified, infused with transformative energy and taking on a sensuous life of its own. Do not miss this.
