Bruckner's 3rd symphony (WAB 103) was dedicated to Richard Wagner and is sometimes known as his "Wagner Symphony". It was written in 1873, revised in 1877 and again in 1891. Here the 1877-version was recorded.
After the complete recordings of the Bruckner Symphonies by Haitink with his Concertgebouw Orchestra (mid 60's - early 70's), Haitink re-recorded some symphonies at the start of the digital era with the Wiener Philharmoniker. The recording series were halted (as was the Mahler-cycle with the Berliner Philharmoniker). As ever under the baton of Haitink, the orchestral playing of the Wiener Philharmoniker is of the highest quality. Enjoy!
