Bleeding Gods, a blackened death metal band from he Netherlands, has managed to put together one of the best concept albums in quite a while (possibly the best all year) and create an album that stands alongside some of the best in blackened death metal. They're on the road to legend status with this album, a menacing behemoth (no pun intended) with shredding guitars, intense song structures and fantastic vocals courtesy of Mark Huisman. If Belphegor can acknowledge this band's talent, so can you (they're already touring with them).

Dodekathlon is a concept album that revolves around Bleeding Gods' take on the 12 Labors of Heracles, and each track is as intense as what you'd imagine taking part in the tasks Heracles actually had to accomplish would be. From the first track, Bloodguilt, to the final track, Hound of Hell, the album barrages you with aggression and rage conveniently packed into one kickass album. Each track represents another labor that Heracles accomplished, and like I said, it makes you feel like you're taking part in each one. As a Greek mythology buff, this kind of concept album is my shit, and I recommend it to any and all mythology fans out there.

The production is top notch–the guitar tone is perfect for this blend of death and black metal, and the drums are fantastic as well, never letting up. I already mentioned how the vocals are great, too; I've always been a fan of the higher shrieks rather than death growls, and while I don't hate the latter, I'll always take soul-piercing screams over the lower growls. This album does a great job of blending the two together in a way that doesn't feel jarring or unfitting, and will please any metal listener.

In short, Dodekathlon will be remembered as one of the best blackened death metal albums of all time, among the likes of The Satanist by Behemoth, Lucifer Incestus by Belphegor, The Goat of Mendes by Akercocke, Thy Mighty Contract by Rotting Christ, and Ugra-Karma by Impaled Nazarene. It's a flawless blend of black metal and death metal, and perfect for fans of either genre–or all of metal in general.
