In terms of background, Aracil seems to have gotten the best of both worlds, having studied in Spain under Cristobal Halffter and Tom?s Marco and in Europe with Iannis Xenakis and Christian Wolff. Despite these disparate, and very powerful, influences, Aracil seems to have decided to go his own way in pursuit of the blasted remnants of German post-Romanticism. He is an excellent orchestrator, and Adagio con variaciones takes as its point of departure a slow movement of a string quartet written by Hugo Wolf. Aracil extracts a fragment from the Adagio, stretches it out, composes "holes" into it, and then weaves in additional strands of music. Adagio con variaciones is a moving and very effective piece, although the bit borrowed from Wolf is so fragmentary at the opening that it really doesn't constitute a "theme" on which to base the variations, at least in a way that the listener can grasp. Tres imagines de Francesca is reminiscent of Berg, and in the concluding "El beso" movement, we hear Aracil reaching again into post-Wagnerian ideas, with very satisfying results. The setting of Milton, translated into Spanish, is strongly melodic in the vocal part, appearing over a workably diffracted orchestral texture, although soprano Ameral Gunson comes across with a slightly glassy and shrill tone, probably more due to the live ambience of the recording than to her actual performance.
