A NEW THIRD WAY? CABLE'S BID FOR THE CENTRE GROUND
“Sir Vince Cable has confirmed Westminster’s worst-kept secret,” said Andrew Grice in The Independent: now seventy five, he will soon step down as leader of the Liberal Democrats, probably next year. But before he leaves, he hopes to change the face of British politics – by transforming his party into a much wider
“movement for moderates”. Cable wants to swell the membership by allowing voters to sign up for free, and by permitting non-MPs to run for the leadership (quite sensible, given that the party now has only twelve MPs). His aim? To occupy the space left by the two main parties, who have moved to the extremes – attracting anti-Corbyn Labour MPs and Tory Remainers to his cause. Tony Blair suggested last week that, at the next election, voters would not “tolerate” a choice between Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn. “Something will fill that vacuum,” he stated. Cable hopes it will be the new, possibly rebranded, Liberal Democrats.
