The Australian landscape, both natural and man-made, provides incredible inspiration for quilt artisans. For this issue of Great Australian Quilts our contributors have drawn from natural wonders such as the Great Barrier Reef and the Aurora Australis to gum trees and Banksias. Why not make Eddie the Emu — a small quilt incorporating fabric collage, thread sketching and quilting. Australia’s flora is the focus of both Dijanne Cevaal’s Banksia wall hanging and Denise Griffith’s 3D Gum Blossom wall hanging. Meanwhile, Michelle Marvig has created a striking cushion simply by stitching the outline of a branch of gum leaves. Catch up with Margaret Rowe-Keys, author of The Australian Challenge Quilt Series of books, and Deborah Wirsu shares with us some of her stunning micro quilts.
