Sylvie Carbonel, studied at the Paris National Conservatory with the renowned pianist and pedagogue Pierre Sancan. She was awarded the First Prize with honors in piano, musical analysis and chamber music. She is a laureate of the George Enesco International Competition in Bucharest and winner of the International Messiaen Prize.

When she was awarded the New York’s prestigious Harkness Fellowship, she went on to live five years in the United States where, continuing her career as a concert pianist, she graduated both from the Julliard School (Jeaneane Dowrs) and from Bloomington (I.U) where she worked with Gyorgy Sebök and was awarded the Artis Diploma. she has also been a close friend and disciple of Radu Lupu in New-York, London and Paris.

Sylvie Carbonel has performed in most of the world’s musical capitals: Paris, New York, Chicago, Washington, Brussels, Hamburg, Munich, Amsterdam, Rome (Villa Medicis 2009), Mexico City, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan…

She has played with such distinguished orchestras as the Baltimore Symphony, the American Symphony, the Aspen Festival Orchestra, other American orchestras, the Radio Philharmonic Orkest of Holland, Scandinavian and Latvian orchestras, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France, and the National Orchestras of Toulouse, Lyon, Montpellier, the Camerata of Lausanne, the Camerata of France… under the direction of Lorin Maazel, Ernest Bour, Sergiu Comissiona, Jorge Mester, Isaïah Jackson, Michel Plasson, Serge Baudo, Daniel Tosi…

She has been on the piano Faculty of the Paris National Conservatory. She gives master-classes in France and in the United-States. Sylvie Carbonel frequently serves as a member of a Jury, to judge Piano competitions in France and internationally.

Her musical curiosity has also led Sylvie Carbonel to play the repertory of our time, and she has played the works of Bartok, Schönberg, Messiaen, Mossolov (the First Concerto with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France) among others.

Sylvie Carbonel played at the Châtelet, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Salle Gaveau in Paris, and made an eleven concert tour in North America (Miami, New Orleans, Minneapolis, Denver, Tulsa, Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Washington D.C., Seattle) . She has also been featured on a Musical Cruise devoted to “Mozart and his time” (Italy, Malta, Lybia, Tunisia).

In 2003, she has created the festival “ Moments Musicaux de Chalosse ” in South West France , of which she has been the Artistic Director from 2003 to 2016. Since 2017, she is the Artistic Director of the Festival “ Musique Vivante dans les Landes”.

She has recorded the complete piano works by Mussorgsky and made other recordings of Schumann, Mozart, Chabrier-Desbrière and Liszt. These recordings have received high praise in France, other European countries, America and Asia.

Sylvie Carbonel has been a guest artist at numerous musical festivals including Aspen (U.S.A.), Menton, Festival of Ravello (Italy), Santander, the Mostly Mozart Festival of New York among others. With friends such as Pierre Amoyal, Gérard Caussé, Patrick Gallois, Gary Hoffmann, Michel Portal, Saskia Lethiec, Frédéric Lodéon, Guy Comentale, Patrice Fontanarosa, Michel Lethiec, Olivier Charlier, Svetlin Roussev and others, she shares the joys of playing chamber music; and she also performs literary and musical shows with the actors Anny Duperey, Daniel Mesguich, Pierre Hentz.
