The Long Riders is a 1980 Western film directed by Walter Hill. It was produced by James Keach, Stacy Keach and Tim Zinnemann and featured an original soundtrack by Ry Cooder. Cooder won the Best Music award in 1980 from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards for this soundtrack.
I don't know of any better music from a Western than this album of "The Long Riders".
Enjoy this fine (U.S. pressing) soundtrack of Cooder! Note: No silence was deleted, so please burn gapless..

This review is from: The Long Riders (Audio CD)
A beautiful collection of bits of Americana, something of a cross between folk and soundtrack, it presaged and far outclasses the songs of the 'Civil War' television series.

This album is suffused with outstanding musicianship. It will carry you to another time and place. The audio quality is superb, placing you right in the room with the players, the way music was enjoyed 100 years ago. An exceptional album.

Director Walter Hill at the back cover:

"The Long Riders", chronicles the rise of the notorious James-Younger gang in the American middle-west of the 1870's. We all know the legend: good men gone bad, the Pinkerston who chased them, the women they loved (ah, the women), the innocent victims of their raids, and in the end, the hard price they paid for their careers.

All these elements factor into a tapestry that seems to me to be both uniquely American and yet well keeping with the folk tales of other cultures. To state the obvious, the notion of outlaw-hero is quite simply a part of unversal heritage. A familair story is much like dance where were we all know the steps, they quality judged by a simple criterion: execution. But then, as we all learned a long time ago, in certain matters form is content.

All which dovetails nicely to the subject of music, and the object of our affection, Ry Cooder. Ry has a habit of reaching into traditional sounds, re-interpeting and making the result singly his own. With the music from The Long Riders, I think he's done it one more time.
