Ben van Oosten is the superstar of symphonic organ music. His multiple award-winning recordings of almost the entire French Romantic organ repertoire are highly acclaimed worldwide. With this dedication to the German Romantic repertoire with masterpieces spanning from Mendelssohn to Reger, van Oosten takes listeners on a sonorous journey through a century of music history that is inspiring in every way.
The Seifert organ of St Mary's Basilica in Kevelaer, the largest and the most innovative instrument at the time it was built, is a befitting choice to dedicate to the German Romantic repertoire. Having just been restored after an eventful history, the organ now sounds exactly as its builders intended.
Reubke's unique sonata is considered a milestone in organ literature on the path from Mendelssohn's Sonata in F Minor to Reger's powerful Wachet Auf fantasy. Karg-Elert's arrangement of Schmucke dich, o liebe Seele is an impressionistic chorale where the melody is treated freely in a transfigured sound world. The delicate chorale preludes by Johann Julius Schneider and Otto Turke are wonderful examples of the originality and colourfulness of the era.
The three-dimensional sound reproduction is impressive, particularly the distinctive colours of the seraphon stops, the Euphone 8', the grand, full-sounding pedal stops and the wonderful Fernwerk sounding from the back right. This combination with the sublimely rich acoustics of the basilica make for a glorious feast for all connoisseurs of Romantic organ music to enjoy.
