Silent Hill is a survival horror video game. In the series, the player takes control of an "everyman" protagonist traversing through the decrepit and nightmare infested remains of the town of Silent Hill

- Silent Hill
Player character Harry Mason drives to the town with daughter Cheryl for a vacation. He swerves to avoid a figure in the road and regains consciousness after a crash to find Cheryl missing. He then searches the deserted, foggy town where it is snowing out of season . After chasing a figure that resembles Cheryl into the fog and slipping in and out of a supposed "Otherworld"—a nightmare version of the town covered in blood and rust, he encounters Cybil Bennett, a police officer; Dahlia Gillespie, who gives him an unusual item, the Flauros, and cryptic warnings about what is to come; Dr. Michael Kaufmann, a doctor who is as bewildered as Harry about their circumstances; and Lisa Garland, a terrified nurse who believes that she is "not supposed to leave" her room in the Otherworld

The game begins with the player taking control of protagonist Henry Townshend, who has been locked in his apartment in South Ashfield, room 302, for five days with no means of communication and having recurring nightmares.Shortly afterwards a large hole inexplicably forms in the wall of his bathroom, and he enters. From there he enters a network of holes leading him through a series of Silent Hill-style worlds.

The player assumes the role of the protagonist, Alex Shepherd, a Special Forces soldier who returns home from an overseas tour of duty to find that his father and younger brother are missing, and that his mother has gone into catatonia.Alex begins to search for his brother, leading him to Silent Hill after searching his hometown of Shepherd's Glen
