A lot of students do not understand how the speaking test is marked. If you are taking a driving test. You would practice with an instructor and you know exactly what the driving test examiner is looking for. They don’t simply say get in the car and do some driving.

A lot of students who take the IELTS speaking test think they are just going to the interview room to do some speaking for 15 minutes or so and thus miss the whole point of the speaking test.

The speaking test is a test for your spoken english language ability (in the context of an academic discussion) not the actual information you are transmitting to the examiner. The actual content of your answers doesn’t matter too much - candidates focus far too much on ‘answering’ the question rather than giving nice developed fluent answers.
