Initially, the Helldiver was intended to be a scout, then a divebomber, but due to the upper wing (the parasol) it was deemed unsuitable. The carrier Yorktown received the first Helldivers in mid 1937 but the arrival of better aircraft soon relegated the Helldiver to hack duty and training. The French and British also took delivery of the Helldiver. The development and modifications of the SBC Helldiver are illustrated with archive photos, line drawings and color profiles.
