The Art Deco Style

A refined elegance of line, sophistication and exquisite workmanship are perhaps some ofthe qualities associated with the Art Deco style which culminated in 1925 at the Paris Exposition Universelle des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. Its origins, however, date back to the early 1900s when such groups as the Wiener Werkstatte, Deutscher Werkbund and De Stijl were founded throughout Europe in reaction to the obsessive curves and ornamentation of Art Nouveau. The style that was to evolve found its home in France and its highest manifestations can be seen in the furniture of Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann.
