The Battle of the Somme lasted five months as the British and French Army fought the Germans in a bloody battle of attrition in northern France. It was one of the bloodiest battles of World War One. The hope was that by reliving the French Army fighting at Verdun and at the same time weakening the German Army the Allies could gain the upper hand and gain ground. However, even with fierce fighting and new technologies such as the tank, the Allies were unable to break through the German lines leaving over one million dead and wounded on all sides. From the thick, muddy, rat infested trenches to the chocking gas and hail of bullets peppering no-man’s land.
