Description

I cover many network terms and what they mean. This is a high-level overview meant to improve your knowledge. Here is a list of some of the topics covered. OSI Model, Ethernet Hub vs. Ethernet switch, MAC Addresses, Router vs. Gateway. Understanding IPv4, Static IP vs. Dynamic IP assignment. Subnet mask ranges and what they mean. Data packets TCP vs. UDP. Open ports and how web browsers and other programs use ports over ethernet to send data. How firewalls have rules to allow and block data on ports. Cat 5 vs Cat 6 cables and their termination ends. POE power over ethernet, Ethernet Cable guidelines and max distance. Type of networking media, Ethernet Fiber and Coax. Ring RSTP Topology, VLANs. IPv6 addressing and shortened notation in IPv6. PC utility programs like Telnet, Hyper Terminal, Putty, VPNs. Common web protocols HTTP and HTTPS using SSL, Modbus and Bacnet OPC protocols. BootP used to help set IP addresses. And Manage switches vs unmanaged Switches. How to connect to a few brands of managed switch to get to their configuration web pages. By the end of this class you should be able to understand why these things exist and be able to talk about them. My goal is to break down all of these items to an easy level to where you can talk to an IT person have a great grasp of these terms and concepts.
