Description

The Sabbath is one of Scripture’s most misunderstood teachings—and it’s also one of its most tender gifts. For some, the Sabbath is a relic of legalism; for others, a burden that ended at the cross. This course lets the Bible itself answer those claims. We begin at creation: God rested, blessed, and sanctified the seventh day (Genesis 2), which means the Sabbath predates Israel and carries a universal, creational basis. From there we trace the Sabbath into the Decalogue (Exodus 20) and into the prophetic witness (Ezekiel 20; Isaiah 66), showing how it functions as a sign of God’s sanctifying presence and a perpetual covenant marker. We examine Jesus’ relationship to the Sabbath—his faithful observance, his declaration that it was “made for man,” and his authority as “Lord of the Sabbath”—and we follow the apostles’ pattern in Acts, noting how Sabbath worship continued in the early church. We tackle the difficult texts honestly: Colossians 2, Romans 14, Acts 20, and Hebrews 9, letting language, structure, and context lead our conclusions. Finally, we place the Sabbath in prophecy: Revelation 14’s Creator call and Isaiah 66’s future worship show Sabbath continuity into the new earth. Practical, pastoral, and unapologetically biblical, this class aims to equip you to explain the Sabbath clearly, defend it carefully, and live it joyfully as a gift—resting in God while standing for truth.
