Description

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, focusing on its principles, processes, technologies, and applications. Students will explore the evolution of 3D printing, from its early development to its current role in Industry 4.0. The course covers the seven standard additive manufacturing processes as defined by ISO/ASTM, including Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Stereolithography (SLA), and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), among others.Participants will gain practical knowledge of the 3D printing workflow—from computer-aided design (CAD) modeling and file preparation to material selection, printing techniques, and post-processing steps. Through hands-on activities and case studies, students will understand how 3D printing enables rapid prototyping, on-demand manufacturing, and customized production across diverse sectors such as aerospace, healthcare, automotive, and consumer products.Emphasis will be placed on comparing additive manufacturing with traditional manufacturing techniques, evaluating cost, efficiency, material properties, and design freedom. Students will also explore the environmental, ethical, and economic implications of adopting 3D printing technologies in industry.By the end of the course, learners will be equipped with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to design and produce basic components using 3D printing, making them well-prepared for further studies or careers involving digital fabrication, product development, or advanced manufacturing technologies.
