The Molotov cocktail evolved from an improvised incendiary device employed by General Francisco Franco's Spanish Nationalists against Soviet T-26 tanks during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939. The Finnish employed the weaponry against Soviet tanks during WWII. In radio broadcasts, Soviet People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs Vyacheslav Molotov said that rather of dropping bombs on the starving Finns, the Soviet Union was giving food to them. The Finns began to refer to air bombs as Molotov bread baskets, and incendiary weaponry used against Soviet tanks as Molotov cocktails.

A stoppered bottle filled with a flammable liquid, such as gasoline or high-proof alcohol, with a fuel-soaked cloth put in the bottle's neck is the most basic version of the device. The stopper separates the fuel from the fuse-making section of the rag. The rag is lit and the bottle is thrown at a car or fortification to make a Molotov cocktail. When the bottle breaks, fuel sprays into the air. The flame ignites the vapor and droplets, resulting in a fireball and eventually a blazing fire that consumes the remaining fuel.
