Description

This course will explain some of the basic questions posed to the field of Psychology. We start with a basic understanding of why we need to understand Psychology covering topics like mind and behavior. When we say the mind, we are referring to states of consciousness or mental processes.  From there we explore Psychology keeping in mind different specializations and career options. While appreciating Individual differences in Psychology, we discuss factors within and outside human beings and their impact on our development helping us grow, develop, mature, and finally evolve in our socio-cultural backgrounds. Development is the pattern of progressive, orderly, and predictable changes that begin at conception and continue throughout life. What causes us to be different from each other but at the same time more like each other? The answer lies in the interaction of heredity and environment. While we discuss how growth takes place we also discuss how gender and Identities evolve. The most powerful roles into which people are socialized are gender roles which are specific behaviors considered appropriate for children to grow up as men and women. A gender role is a set of expectations that prescribes how we should think, act, and feel.  Our last unit will be a discussion on eminent theorists and their contributions to the field of psychology.
