The author focuses especially on weaknesses in numeracy often observed in adults, and in teacher-trainees in particular. He has worked for 30 years in teacher education, both initial and in-service, but he also has considerable practical experience of teaching in primary classrooms. His work in mathematics education has taken him to Germany, Belgium, Lesotho, Kenya, Brunei and India.
