The DC comic book series by Neil Gaiman may have concluded with Issue 75, but numerous comics, novels and spin-offs continue to make use of its characters, concepts and universe, perhaps because it remains to date the most critically-acclaimed, most-awarded comic book series, period. Among those spin-offs is , a three-issue mini-series written by Mike Carey and published March-May 1999, in which Lucifer (having retired from Hell to run his jazz club "Lux") is approached by an angel who requests that he perform a service for heaven, one which the angels themselves cannot do, and for which he will be handsomely paid. Naturally its pedigree brought it attention, but not as much as that focused on many of its ilk, and not much praise either. But it more than holds its own, owing purely to the creative efforts of writer Mike Carey and artist Scott Hampton (Neil Gaiman was consultant). And, as an introduction to the eponymous 75-issue series that followed, --which is definitely on par with, if not even better than many of its co-Eisner nominees that won--this mini-series is perfect.
