Captain America: Reborn Saga Compilation, Complete

is a six-issue (originally intended to be five issues) monthly comic book limited series published by Marvel Comics between July 2009 and January 2010. Written by Ed Brubaker, and illustrated by Bryan Hitch with inking by Butch Guice, the series promises to reveal the "truth" regarding the death of original Captain America Steve Rogers, returning him to life and to the role of the Star-Spangled Avenger. The story arc "Road To Reborn" in Captain America's eponymous ongoing series (also currently written by Ed Brubaker; Volume 5 in library terms), consisting of issues #49-50 and #600-601 (Marvel reverted to the original numbering after issue #50) actually lays the groundwork for Brubaker's limited series. More accurately, it is , the release of which was timed to coincide with Captain America's death anniversary, that directly segues to . Being of course a landmark anniversary issue in more ways than one #600 is a special giant-sized issue. In addition, Marvel featured online a digital comic prequel to the Reborn limited series, , likewise included here. is the odd issue out in this compilation. Although it is officially considered part of the story arc in the main Captain America ongoing series, technically it is a special stand-alone issue, a double-sized flashback that takes us back to World War II with Cap and Bucky. It is reminiscent of, and complementary to, Captain America: Civil War (Vol. 5, #22-24). It is also a strange, albeit fantastic horror story that puts the series on hold for the rest of 2009 as thereafter is launched (the series resumes with issue #602). Its artist is none other than the legendary Eisner Hall of Famer and octogenarian Gene Colan, who shows that even in his advanced years, he is still improving. Of course Brubaker gives him free rein. And because it's Colan, a must-have collector's item. It is unfortunate, however, that what could have been a tighter, five-issue series became what it is right now. Clearly, Marvel has botched its handling of this series, which by all indications was meticulously built up since last year. Admittedly the title itself is a giveaway (duhh!) but what the heck they could however build up excitement and suspense by not making Steve Rogers do any cameo appearances in any other titles (as in the initial issues, for example) until after the completion of this limited series. Moreover, the very good one-shot which supposedly is to wrap things up nicely as an epilogue was released last December 23, 2009 yet, more than a month was released (January 27, 2010). This was because the series skipped a month (October 2009) and was added a sixth issue. As a result, issue #6, supposed to portray the series high points, somehow comes off as a mere afterthought--despite some great action sequences--literally and descriptively. But that's my own opinion so don't let that bother you.
