    Dialogen Symposion er Platons litterært set mest ambitiøse værk. I flere rammefortællinger refereres et drikkegilde hos digteren Agathon, hvor en række mænd med Sokrates i spidsen tilbringer aftenen med at lovprise og diskutere Kærlighedens væsen. Gæsternes indlæg bliver syv indlæg af stadig større abstraktionsgrad og slutter med Sokrates' referat af den vise kvinde Diotimas undervisning. Her fremstiller Platon tydeligere end noget andet sted sin lære om de evige former, idéerne, og menneskets mulighed for at forstå eller 'skue' dem. Symposion ender festligt med, at en meget beruset Alkibiades blander sig i selskabet og holder en begejstret og meget åbenhjertig tale om sit forhold til Sokrates.
