Carl Theodor Dreyer's classic silent film. In four episodes, we witness how Satan must walk the Earth and tempt men to do evil. The first episode tells the story of the betrayal of Jesus by Judas. The second episode takes place in 16th-century Spain; Satan is a Grand Inquisitor, who manipulates a tormented young monk into committing an ugly rape. The third episode takes place during the French Revolution. The final episode is set during the Finnish civil war in 1918. The script was written in 1913 by Danish author Edgard Høyer (the final episode was originally set during the Russo-Japanese War); it is an original work and owes nothing to Marie Corelli's 1895 bestseller The Sorrows of Satan, filmed by D.W. Griffith in 1926.
